CONRAIL LEGACY
Volume One + Volume Two
2 disc DVD set |
|
In 1976, Conrail (The
Consolidated Rail Corporation) was formed from seven bankrupt
northeastern railroads. Initially a government run
operation, Conrail later thrived as a public company until it
was merged with CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999. In the 1990's, Conrail was the definition of northeastern railroading. Blue diesels from EMD and GE handled heavy freight across the Allegheny mountains.

THE
UNION RAILROAD
Industrial Railroading
in
the Steel City |
The Union Railroad
is a rarity in today's world of railroading. Relying on a fleet
of MP15 and SW1500 switchers, the Union exists to serve the
steel industry in the Pittsburgh area along the Monongahela
River. Frequent backing moves and switching mandates the use of
cabooses on all trains, a practice that can be seen few places
today.

BLACK and
BLUE
Norfolk Southern
in
Central Pennsylvania |
 |
In 1999, Norfolk Southern
acquired the Conrail (formerly PRR) mainline across
Pennsylvania. Conrail blue and NS black now work side-by-side
hauling more traffic than ever across the keystone state.
Multiple helpers (classic SD40-2s, many in Conrail blue) push a
seemingly endless parade of trains over the East
Slope.

OVER THE
MOUNTAIN
CSX in the
Laurel Highlands |
For as long as there
have been railroads in America, trains have fought their way
through the Allegheny mountains in the Laurel Highlands region.
CSX is the latest railroad to carry on in this tradition, moving
heavy freight trains through some of the most scenic areas of
southwestern Pennsylvania and western Maryland.

CSX KEYSTONE SUBDIVISION
Connellsville, Pennsylvania |
 |
Located at the base of the Laurel Highlands, Connellsville, Pennsylvania is the western end of CSX's Keystone Subdivision. Eastbound freights begin their assault on the Alleghenies here, while westbound trains speed towards Pittsburgh along the Youghiogheny River. Yard action, Amtrak's Capitol Limited, and fast freight are featured in this DVD, which was shot between 2001 and 2003.

CSX
Along Lake Erie |
The
Lake Shore Line from Buffalo, New York to Cleveland, Ohio, has
seen many changes over the years. From the early days of
the mighty New York Central and the Nickel Plate Road to today's
high speed freight operations on the CSX (former Conrail) and
Norfolk Southern mainlines, this area has been one of the
busiest lines in the northeast.
